In order to get your CFI Ticket, you first have to pass 2 Exams. The first of these is the FAA Fundamentals of Instruction (FOI) Exam. The FOI exam is a 50 question exam that proves to FAA you have the knowledge and skills to teach. If you already have another FAA Instructor Rating (AGI, BGI or IGI) you have already passed this exam. You can also receive credit for this exam if you hold a current teacher’s certificate at the junior or senior high school level, or you are an instructor at a college or university.
The second test is the Initial CFI Exam. This exam is category specific and options include Flight Instructor Airplane, Flight Instructor Rotorcraft Helicopter, Flight Instructor Rotorcraft Gyroplane, Flight Instructor Glider, and about 10 other variations.
The subject material for these Initial CFI Exams come from the VFR knowledge areas. Our combined Commercial and Private Pilot test preparation cover this material extensively, and through that combined knowledge area, covers approximately 85%-90% of the subject knowledge needed to pass the Initial CFI Exam. This course, with about 1 – 1 ½ hours of self-study utilizing the ASA CFI Test Prep (Included with the course) and our outlined procedure will fully prepare your for the Initial CFI and FOI Exams.

You will be in a combined Private/Commercial program, where you will review the vast majority of the information you need to pass the Initial CFI and FOI Knowledge Exams. After the regular course is over on Saturday, you will spend Commercial Only time with our instructor, going over the Commercial Specific Knowledge areas. Constructing the class in this manner ensures that you will get very personal instruction going through the Private and Commercial Pilot Knowledge areas so you can pass the Initial CFI and FOI Exams.
Class runs Saturday 8:00-6:00 and Sunday from 8:00-4:00.
Note: Commercial Specific information will be cover from 6:00 pm -7:30 pm Saturday.
The Initial CFI Exam contains 100 questions. These questions are chosen from 1000’s of questions in the exam database. Most of the knowledge areas in the FAA CFI test database are shared with the Private Pilot & Commercial Pilot (Most of which you have probably forgotten) with some additional questions, and steps. You are allowed 2.5 hours to complete the exam. The FOI Exam consists of 50 questions and you are allowed 1.5 hours to complete the exam.
