Private Pilot

Test prep

For just $429 you get top quality ground instruction, on-line course manual (printed version available), immediate updates on FAA computer exam questions, and in-person instruction that teaches content first, then answers test questions.

Aviation Seminars has broken the FAA test into individual subject areas (see Topics Covered below). We teach each of those subjects individually, followed by a review of FAA Test Questions from that subject area. This ensures that not only do you receive instruction in each of the FAA Exam Subject areas, but you will be familiarized with how the FAA will question you on those subjects. This review also makes certain that the class understands each subject fully before moving on to the next subject.

Class runs Saturday 8:00-6:00 and Sunday from 8:00-4:00.

There is personal attention in small groups - your questions get answered. 95% pass the test the first time. If you don't pass, re-attend the next class in your area, for free. If you still don't pass, get a 100% refund. After passing your exam, you may re-attend for review purposes without cost within 1 year of your original attendance.

PRIVATE PILOT - Course Contents

The Private Pilot exam contains 60 questions. These questions are chosen from over 900 questions in the exam database. You are allowed 2 1/2 hours to complete the exam.

UPDATE: Over the last year, FAA has greatly increased the difficulty of the FAA Exam. Due to these changes, we are no longer recommending Sunday as the best time to take the FAA Exam. Our suggestion is to wait to test until after taking a few of our on-line practice exams. This will help to guarantee that you pass the exam on your first try!

Topics covered include:

• Federal Aviation regulations
• Aerodynamics and Aircraft Operations
• Navigation
• Aircraft Instruments
• Aeronautical Information Manual
• Aircraft Performance
• Weight and Balance
• Weather Theory
• Weather Reports and Forecasts

Sample Private Pilot Question

An aircraft is loaded 110 pounds over maximum certificated gross weight. If fuel (gasoline) is drained to bring the aircraft within limits, how much fuel should be drained?

Answer:

Remember, aviation fuel weighs six pounds per gallon. Therefore, if the aircraft is 110 pounds over the maximum, simply divide the 110 pounds of fuel by 6, and the correct answer is 18.4 gallons!

Take this sample pilot question:

"If the magnetic heading is 330 degrees and the relative bearing is 270 degrees, what is the magnetic bearing to the station?"

ANSWER:

Remember the formula: MH+RB=Mbto. So, 330 + 270 = 600. Well, there is no 600 degrees, so we subtract 360 from it and get 240 degrees, which is the magnetic bearing to the station!

You need to shift cargo from the rear cargo area to the front cargo area for a distance of 104 inches. The gross weight of the aircraft is 3600 lbs. How much weight would be needed to change from 94 inches to 92 inches?

Answer:

Here's how to do it. Multiply the distance shifted by the weight shifted, then divide this by the total weight of the aircraft. The result will be the distance the CG changes. Just make the substitutions and you got it!!.

"Just wanted to let you know that this refresher class was the best one I've ever attended. Jerry Koszyk did a great job and turned the usual boring and tedious refresher into a more than tolerable and often enjoyable experience. It didn't hurt that this class had some real characters in it either. Thanks, I'm actually looking forward to doing it again in two years."

    Testimonials

    • Dave, Donna and I finally took our PP written test this morning, I scored a 93% and Donna scored a 80% - Scott and Donna

    • I attended the course in Michigan a couple of weeks ago. It was a wonderful weekend and the class was not only informative but enjoyable. Dan is a wonderful instructor and I truly appreciate his time and effort in making sure everyone understood the information. I passed the private pilot written exam and now getting ready for the oral exam with the FAA examiner. Many Thanks!! - Teresa

    • I attended this seminar last weekend ( 5/4-5/5) with George Toth as our instructor. Mr. Toth is an incredible instructor and your seminar was fantastic! I am excited to tell you that I sat for the exam today and passed with a 93!! I am convinced that the only reason I was able to accomplish this was because of the detailed and concise written material and with the patient instruction of Mr. Toth. I am ecstatic that I learned of this seminar as I am convinced my results (and confidence going into the exam) would have been significantly lower. Please let Mr. Butler, and everyone associated with this seminar, know how grateful I am for this seminar. Lastly, please let George Toth know how thankful I am for his clear and patient instruction. He is a first class instructor. Thank you for everything! - Jim

    • Took your class in Jacksonville this weekend with John Slate. It was a great experience and I passed the test yesterday evening with a 80. I am sure you guys have plenty of references but if you need another I would gladly do so. When it come time for the insturment test I will be using you again. - Matt

    • Dave,The course material was done very well. Mr. Toth was exceptional. He took his time and answered any questions we had. He was enthusiastic about each us becoming better, safer pilots.I took the IFR written last night at ATP at Toball Jet Center. I passed with a score of 87. The class was exactly what I needed to better understand the test process and the style of questioning. Please tell Mr. Toth I appreciate his effort very much. - Terry

    • I just wanted to thank you again for the great class you held @ Indi month before last. I'm pleased to report that I was able to pass the test on my first try and felt quite comfortable that I was ready. It was a pleasurable experience using this service. I have and will continue to recommended you to fellow non-IFR rated pilots. Thanks again and have a great fall season. - David

    • Hi Dave, I took the FAA knowledge test on fri, and passed with a score of 88. Thanks to you and AV SEM for all the help. I feel like I still need to learn lots more, so I will continue to do so, but at least I have accomplished this major step! - Steve

    • Took test today. 99%. Missed 1. Must have mis-read chart. - Ray

    • Hello Dave, Third of three weekends with Aviation Seminars, another written in the bag! I think if I had waited until October I would have had my 'customary' score in the nineties but even with very limited prep time I was able to pass at 83%!!! Your seminars work exactly as intended, get prepped and pass the test. I usually give clear expectations to my flight instructors about focusing on the long-term memory stuff, so I find it a great combination... - Daniel

    • Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Instrument class last weekend. Irv presented the material very clearly and took the time to go thru and explain in detail. It was a particular pleasure for me because I first met Irv in 1971 when we were in the Army reserve unit, the 11th Special Forces Group. Needless to say, I had a great time catching up with him - Geoff

    • Enjoyed the course study program that Al Collins put on in Birmingham this passed weekend. He did a really good job and was very helpful. After almost 30 years AVS still in my opinion is the best course of study to take the FAA test. - Jay

    • Dave -Just wanted to report that I passed the Written today - thanks to your seminar. My score was a 90%. I saw two questions that must have been new adds. Irv Bolm is a top notch instructor and my 'hats off' for the great outlines that made my success a reality! Thanks. - Kirk

    • When I first began studying for my instrument written exam, I was humbled by the amount of information and technical specificity. I was often frustrated and found the learning curve to be quite steep. I am not a casual student. I throw myself completely into the subject I am studying with an intent to understand the concepts, not just pass the test. After several months of study, I was understanding the concepts but having trouble with the practice tests. After taking your instrument prep class in Fort Lauderdale, I scored a 97% on my exam on December 10, 2012. With that behind me, I can now concentrate clearly on my flight training without the exam hanging over my head. THANK YOU Aviation Seminars and THANK YOU Marty Calano!!! - Michael

    • I got a 97 on the test, thanks to you and Irv! - Jeffrey

    • Thank you Dave and please thank the instructor today,I passed my exam with a 92%. - Leonel

I look forward to taking a prep course for my commercial and CFI with you guys! - David Saglam

    • Hi Dave, Thanks for the help.... I actually missed one (1) so I guess you class wasn't perfect! Hahaha...just teasing... - John

    • Dave, I just wanted to send you an email with feedback from the instrument test prep in Pa this weekend. Irv did a fantastic job teaching the course and I feel far more prepared for the exam than I did before attending. I have only recently started my instrument training, and the material that was presented gave me an excellent knowledge base to work with. Thanks to Irv and his instructing style I will be recommending this course to my friends! - Joshua

    • Hello, Like I said on the phone - I passed!!! One step closer to the instrument rating. Thanks again to you and kudos to Jeff, your instructor. He stayed on target with time but also covered areas where we needed extra instruction/help. The class exceeded my expectations - Mary Ann

There were several questions referencing GPS, and one on icing. The review class helped a great deal and Mr. Orr in San Diego did a great job. - R

This year I was pressed for time so I took a chance on your FIRC and was pleasantly surprised. There were lots of useful resources provided and the discussions around the new PTS changes and regs were much more helpful to me than reading it on my laptop or watching streaming videos.I'll be back in 2014. - Frank

    • I wanted to let you know that Bob did a great job. His style of teaching was to keep everyone involved throughout the class by asking them questions, or having them read/contribute. This kept engagement high, and conversation lively. I did not get a chance to hand in a course eval and I wanted to let you know that I felt it was a good seminar. - James

    • I just passed my written exam for the Instrument rating this morning after spending Sat & Sun in Mr. Hennessey's class at T. Black Aviation in Tampa (St. Pete). I got a 95%! Mr. Hennessey asked that we provide our feedback to Aviation Seminars... I was very happy with the class. I like that the course was taught point-by-point (rather than just playing a video for each segment.) We covered each topic thoroughly without ever getting off track - time was managed very efficiently. Mr. Hennessey possesses the skill of being both no-nonsense and very pleasant to work with. You can tell that he holds himself to a standard of excellence, and I've always found this to be contagious. I will recommend this course to anyone who is serious about doing well on their written exam. If I were to offer any constructive criticism - it would only be to consider hitting the Navigation (VOR, RMI, HSI, ADF) earlier in the day rather than later. After several hours into the course on Saturday, my brain was failing on simple calculations that I'd expect to do better on with fresh eyes. However, we have to perform at our best in the cockpit even when we're tired - so perhaps that was all part of the plan! T. Black's facility is top notch - very comfortable and pleasant environment. I\'ve used them before and will again. I would rate the entire experience as Excellent. - Linda

My practice scores slowly increased from 75% to 88%. The following Monday (8 days after the course), I took my CFII written and received an 86% score. I would recommend your program to others. - Steve

    • This weekend I had the pleasure of undergoing a course of instruction in San Antonio, presented by Aviation Seminar's Geoge Toth.Having attended many seminars in my day, especially after 25 years of military service, I was a bit apprehensive as to the quality of instruction I was about to receive... From the very outset of my class, Mr.Toth made it clear that it was his goal to ensure that each student had the best possible chance of passing the Private Pilot Knowledge Exam (the 'Written') on the first go.George waded through a staggering amount of material during the two-day intensive course, in a thoroughly professional manner. His instruction was consistently first-class. He went above and beyond throughout, providing one-on-one tutelage along the way, making sure that each and every student was up to speed on every topic presented.Possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of aviation related knowledge, George made our 'total immersion' weekend actually enjoyable. It is patently obvious that Mr. Toth knows his stuff, knows how to teach, enjoys what he does, and cares about his students. I consider myself fortunate to have been one of them. - Hans

    • Please accept this note as a follow up note of great respect for the teaching this past weekend of Irv Boim, who taught the commercial rating preparation course at Oxford airport in Connecticut. Not only did I pass my commercial written test on Tuesday but I also learned several key skills. As example, Irv spent some time with me personally on Saturday evening teaching me the ADF. Now, I plan to add this tool as a back up when flying. In any event, I would highly recommend this skillful instructor. He is knowledgeable. Personable. And a fine teacher. He represents you very very well. - Tony

    • I just wanted to drop a quick note thanking you for your terrific prep courses. About a year ago I sat in on your Commercial prep course followed a couple weeks later by your Instrument prep course (a little out of sequence but it worked) at which time I was a 150 hour Private Pilot. In the past year I have gone from quite low time to flying as a type rated, and more importantly paid, First Officer flying the Metroliner for a 135 cargo operator and am even in the running for the next LearJet class. Since November I've been getting paid to do what I love and just wanted to express my appreciation for your courses! - Byrant

    • I was in your FAA exam prep course 2 weekends ago, and I wanted to update you that I took, and passed, my exam! I got a 92%, which I am very happy with.
